Adult Autism
Adult Autism Assessments and Coaching
As a natural part of offering psychotherapy to adults looking for additional mental and emotional support and strategies, it is entirely expected that a percentage of my clients will have neurodivergent brains. The reason they may be struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, relationships or depression is because all of these challenges can co-occur when an autistic or ADHD person is continually compromising and adjusting to succeed in a world designed for neurotypical people.
Many adults have had difficult or traumatic childhoods, learning how to mask or camouflage their intuitive behaviours to align with the social expectations of their families, schools, workplaces or friendship groups.
Level 1 autism (what used to be called Aspergers) is not a disability, it’s a brain difference. Thankfully in today’s society and work places the awareness of the potential benefits and challenges of autism are increasingly being understood. The responsibility for that understanding belongs with all of us equally, neurodivergent and neurotypical. Similarly, it can help a lot if you are autistic to:
- Learn more about your brain and why it processes and responds as it does
- Explore environments and relationships that work best for you
- Educate yourself about how to overcome or ease the challenges you experience each day
- Practice communicating more effectively and unapologetically to other people so they can better understand your brain design, needs, and world-view
- Have a deeper awareness yourself and how to get your physical and emotional needs met healthily.
Healthy Chat is committed to identifying and celebrating the strengths of neurodivergent people of all ages.
Human Givens therapy (HG) is the sole therapy used at Healthy Chat, because it’s fast and effective and includes a range of ways to help and to make changes quickly. The tools we use include cognitive and behavioural therapies, clinical hypnotherapy, and solution-focussed conversation all of which help to identify the specific challenges in a person’s life and then find solutions, additional coping skills and new frameworks to simplify life’s perplexing ups and downs.
The applications for HG outside of private practice are already broad. They can be found in mental and physical healthcare, education, social work, private business, large corporates, tech innovation, new energy, conflict-resolution, sport and high-performance coaching and beyond.
Assessments
The autism assessment includes 2 separate interviews, one with the potentially-autistic client themselves, and the other with a parent, carer, or family member who has known them from childhood (ideally). These assessments are the ones you’d receive if you were assessed via an NHS route.
They are:
ADOS-2: Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition
This is a standardized assessment tool used to help diagnose autism spectrum difference (ASD) in children and adults. It is tailored to the individual’s age and communication level.
It is a semi-structured interview and activity session which lasts 60-90 minutes in total. As mentioned above, Healthy Chat specialises in assessing late-teens (18+) and adults only. This interview happens in-person and so a client should factor in plans to travel to my home-office in Angus, Scotland.
The ADOS-2 is considered a “gold-standard” instrument for diagnosing ASD and provides direct information on current Autistic Spectrum symptoms. It is designed to be used in combination with other clinical assessments to determine if an autism diagnosis is appropriate. And so we will additionally assess using an ADI-R.
ADI-R: Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised
The ADI-R, compliments the ADOS by providing information on early development, focusing mainly on the time period between 4 and 5 years of age. This interview therefore is ideally carried out with a parent or guardian who has known you since childhood.
The conversations involved to capture the information required of an ADI-R can last 60-120 minutes. And are normally conducted online over Zoom, or by phone. In-person is also a possibility, on request.
There are 5 steps from here to receiving an autism diagnosis:
- Get in touch: email hello@healthychat.co.uk and schedule a time for a first conversation
- Initial Conversation: this is 50-60 minutes and will take place online (or by phone). This is for me to begin to understand some of the reasons why you’re exploring the possibility of being autistic. What difficulties or challenges are you experiencing now and have you experienced growing up.
- Autism Assessments: these will be the ADOS-2 scheduled with you, in person; and the ADI-R scheduled with a parent or guardian (or if they’re not accessible we can discuss alternative options).
- Feedback Session: this is a 50-60 minutes by phone to discuss the findings of the assessments. It will take place within 7 days of the interview so there are a few short days only until receiving your results. During this conversation we will also discuss Autism Coaching so you have options for short or longer term ongoing support & further personal development.
- Report: the results of the Autism Assessment will be written up and emailed to you within 4 weeks (usually) of the feedback session. This time is required because the interview results may be discussed within a multi-disciplinary team (an autism specialist, and a clinical psychiatrist) to ensure the most accurate interpretation of the interviews is included in your written report.

“When I was diagnosed, it just gave me permission to be kinder to myself, to not always take responsibility for being a bit clumsy around other people, and allow me to start to tell people, ‘I’m clumsy, but I don’t mean to be.’ And being more open about, ‘I need you to tell me what I did wrong, and then we can move on from there.” - Hannah Gadsby
